One of our favorite things at Frontier Custom Builders is helping clients reimagine their spaces to create a home they love. So, when the owners of this Minneapolis, Minnesota home reached out about a complete remodel, we were more than happy to help.
Built in 1947, this classic Cape Cod-style home featured a main level, basement, and attic. With a smaller footprint, the homeowners were feeling a little cramped in their space. The two bedrooms and shared bathroom on the main level were small, so they had set up their owner’s suite in the basement. The owners wanted to add more space to their home by converting the attic into an owner’s suite and opening the kitchen into the living room.
Compared to the former, the latter was easy! We added a steel beam and partially removed the wall that divided the two spaces to open the kitchen to the living room. We also hid a load-bearing beam inside the kitchen cabinets for extra support.
The real challenge lay in converting the existing attic space into a functional owner’s suite. Although the original footprint worked for the design, the ceiling was relatively low. To create a more usable space, we decided to “pop the top” and rebuild the roof to get 9-foot tall ceilings. Installing the second level’s plumbing waste lines into the floor was also a bit of a challenge.
This project is one of our most memorable to date — the before and after are genuinely stunning! We love every room, but if we had to pick our favorite space, it would be the owner’s suite. The transformation turned out even better than we could have imagined. The tall ceilings and expansive black framed windows give it a bright, airy feel, but the real showstopper is the ensuite bathroom. We can’t get over how beautifully the gold fixtures compliment the custom walk-in tile shower and white oak vanity!
